Hanhwa, a textile manufacturer in Wakayama known as a "fabric department store," and Shikibo, which now supports Japanese manufacturing with industrial materials beyond its original textile business, have a long-standing relationship dating back before the war. Mr. Minamikata, the representative of Hanhwa, focuses on two threads with contrasting characteristics that Shikibo possesses.
The first is "Dragon Twist Crunch." This is a spinning technique that stretches fine fibers and twists them using an air vortex, allowing for a stronger crispness and a smoother texture than regular ring spinning. This thread is used on the surface.
For the reverse side, they chose the "Dual Roman" highly twisted yarn. This is a spun-twisted yarn made for high-end towels (two coarse yarns are spun before becoming yarn, increasing uniformity and resulting in a smoother fabric), boasting top-level softness and absorbency among Shikibo's yarns.
It's a moderately thick 18-gauge fleece, using Dragon Twist Crunch #30 for the outer yarn and two strands of Dual Roman #18 for the inner yarn.
A solitary piece where the crisp, beautiful white of the outer fabric coexists with the gentle lining reminiscent of a bathrobe. This is likely achievable only because of the two masters who know each other's yarns and weaving inside out.
