American photographer Joseph Szabo taught photography at Malverne High School in Long Island, New York, from 1972 to 1999. His 1978 book 'Almost Grown', which documented the adolescence of teenagers, is regarded as a timeless masterpiece, and Szabo's works are permanently housed in the Metropolitan Museum of Art.
This photo was used as the cover for "TEENAGE," an album-like photo book published in 2003, after Szabo retired as a photography educator. The sight of teenagers casually holding cigarettes, which now seems unrealistic, captures the subjects at a very intimate distance, expressing the delicate and fluctuating emotions of adolescence with unparalleled clarity.
The body of the shirt is also meticulously crafted, featuring a 25mm wide neck rib, and the hem and sleeves are finished with a skilled blind stitch (also known as single stitch). All seams connecting the neck rib and arms are also single-locked, perfectly replicating the body of T-shirts from the 90s (most current T-shirts have double-stitched sleeves, hems, and neck/arm seams). The 6.2 oz fabric, knitted from 100% American cotton, is made in the USA and, of course, features a tubular knit construction. This special piece is then sewn and printed in Japan.
