American photographer Joseph Szabo worked in photographic education at Malvern High School in Long Island, New York, from 1972 to 1999. His 1978 photo collection "Almost Grown," which documented teenage adolescence, is considered a legendary masterpiece and is held in the permanent collection of the Metropolitan Museum of Art.
This photograph was used as the cover for "TEENAGE," a yearbook-like photo collection released in 2003 after Szabo retired from his career as a photography educator. While the sight of teenagers commonly smoking cigarettes is now unrealistic, the subjects are captured at an intimate distance, expressing the delicate and fluctuating emotions of adolescence with unparalleled clarity.
The body of the shirt also underwent thorough attention to detail: a 25mm wide neck rib, expertly finished hems and sleeves using a chain stitch (also known as a blind stitch or single stitch), and all seams connecting the neck rib and arms finished with a single lock stitch, perfectly recreating the body of a 90s-era t-shirt (in contrast, most current t-shirts have double stitches for the sleeves, hems, and neck/arm seams). The 6.2 oz fabric, knitted from 100% American cotton, is made in the USA and is of course tubular knit. This is a special item, sewn and printed in Japan.
