The "Akita Ondo" sings about Akita's specialties, and it includes the lyric "~Odate Magewappa". Magewappa originated when lumberjacks bent raw wood to make their own lunch boxes. Mr. Shunji Kurimori, the representative of 'Kurikyu', whose father was a cherry bark craftsperson, is the sixth generation and a traditional craftsman of Odate Magewappa. After soaking thinly peeled straight-grain Akita cedar boards in hot water to fully absorb water, two layers are placed on a bending tool called a "koro" (log), and bent by rolling them. Koros come in various shapes depending on the size and depth of the vessel; conical ones are bent with conical koros, and oval ones with oval koros. After temporary fastening, they are dried and glued. Finally, they are sewn with cherry bark, the bottom is inserted, and painted to complete a beautiful magewappa. One day, Mr. Kurimori was shocked when his wife told him, "Cylindrical shapes are inconvenient and difficult to use," and after much trial and error, he created a mortar-shaped bent vessel with a wide opening at the top. This resulted in a modern and new vessel unlike any before. Since then, the range of designs has expanded further, and since 1968, it has won numerous awards, including the Good Design Award and the Long Life Design Award.
