Kazushige Ijiri

I am a traditional woodcarving craftsman from Shiga Prefecture and usually make Buddhist altars.

Due to the recent decline in demand, I applied techniques cultivated in making Buddhist altars to develop hand-carved pierced earrings.

Even within the same piece of wood, the place where it is cut out and the carving angle show various expressions, so while assessing the characteristics of the wood, I overlapped the image of Lake Biwa — which shows completely different expressions depending on season, time, place, and angle — and created 'Biwako no Shizuku' (Lake Biwa Drops).

Please enjoy these wood earrings, which change in color and gain depth of character over time.
